Time–chainage planning for metro and tunnel works

Plan the tunnel along the alignment, not down a calendar.

A Gantt bar tells you when a task happens, not where. In tunnelling the two cannot be separated: two headings cannot be at the same chainage on the same day. A time–chainage diagram holds both in one picture, so clashes, waiting and gaps become visible.

What it does

1

Define the alignment once

Stations, shafts, crossovers and tunnel reaches are entered with their chainages. The method (TBM / NATM / cut-and-cover) belongs to the alignment, as stated in the tender drawings. The user does not design sections; they transcribe what the authority specified.

2

Duration follows from the geology

The ground in each reach sets the support class; the support class sets the advance rate. In NATM the top and bottom headings advance at different rates, and the lag between them adds a tail. Rates are measured corporate data, not guesses; anything not entered is flagged as an assumption.

3

Quantities come from the recipe

For every tunnel-type and support-class pair the per-metre excavation, shotcrete, steel sets, mesh, bolts, forepoling, membrane and lining quantities are ready. Thirty combinations, each verified against real projects.

4

Record what actually happened

Cumulative metres from site are entered heading by heading. Plan and measurement sit side by side on the same diagram: the deviation reads in both metres and days. A task with no measurement is not counted as zero — it is counted as unmeasured, and the uncovered length is stated.

How it works

An eight-step setup, then the day-to-day table. We assume your data is in Excel, because it is.

  1. 1 Alignment Stations and tunnel reaches with chainages
  2. 2 Geology Formations at tunnel level; a coverage bar shows what is missing
  3. 3 Sections and machines NATM tunnel types, TBM entry and exit chainages
  4. 4 Schedule Rates and calendar, with non-working days deducted

Paste from Excel

Blocks can be pasted into the alignment, geology and progress tables. Columns are matched by header name, and the preview states how many rows were read and what was not recognised. Nothing enters the table without your confirmation.

CtrlV

Fill it from the keyboard

Enter moves down and opens a new row at the end. Ctrl+D copies the value above. A new row inherits the previous row's type. Typing =A1000 in a date cell links it to that activity; +5 starts it five days after the previous one.

EnterCtrlD =A1000+5

Verification view

The person preparing the schedule is not the person approving it. The verification view is read-only and answers one question: where does this number come from? Every metric carries its basis underneath. A value that cannot be computed is not left blank — the reason is given.

  • Every number with its basis
  • Missing data is listed, not hidden
  • Assumptions marked apart from measurements
  • Printable and signable

Computed once measurements exist. We do not assume zero and show everything as remaining — not knowing and not having done are different things.

What it does not do

The most dangerous thing a planning tool can do is present what it does not know as if it did. So:
